March Birthstone

Aquamarine – that beautiful greenish blue to blue-green gemstone! In fact, aquamarine gets its name from the Latin word for “sea water”….how appropriate! You may never have guessed that it is, in fact, the same mineral as emerald…both being beryl.

aquamarineAquamarine, like all gemstones, has its own legends and lore. For example, people in the Middle Ages thought that aqua somehow magically conveyed insight and foresight. Holding one in the mouth allowed a person to call up spirits to answer life’s most vexing questions. Also, water that an aquamarine had soaked in was prescribed for eye troubles, respiratory diseases and hiccups. Aquamarine’s color made it a symbol of happiness and everlasting youth. Wow! You are indeed very lucky to have aquamarine for your birthstone.

bracelet08-01Aquamarine, by its very nature, is a very clear gemstone. It has a hardness of 7 1/2 to 8, so it is fairly durable. It is also found in larger sizes, with stones up to 10.0 carats being common. In fact, one crystal was found in Brazil in 1920 that weighed 243 pounds and measured 19 x 16 inches! It was fashioned into many, very fine quality gems. The most common sources for aqua is Brazil, Afghanistan, Madagascar and the U.S.
